News From the Camp Fire - Summer 2010

What a spectacular summer it's been so far! The weather has been top notch; warm sunny days and cool evenings... perfect for outdoor activities, campfires, and great sleeping. Along with families and fishermen, two groups took advantage of the great weather this year. In July the Pruden's hosted a Family Reunion and the Rainbow Baha'i hosted a summer camp here at Charlton Lake. Fun, fishing, hiking, paddling, and swimming were the main events at both gatherings.

Camp Improvements

Construction is complete on the new fish hut/storage building. Located at the water's edge in front of the office, the new fish hut provides anglers a clean, bug-free area to clean your catch.

Renovation of the old ice house roof was also begun this spring. More photos of both projects can be seen on the Charlton Lake Camp Facebook page. Stay tuned for projects yet to come!

Guest of Honor

We're looking forward to meeting a special guest in August. Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, we have an opportunity to fulfill the wish of a young man from Columbus, Ohio who is challenged with cystic fibrosis. Michael's wish is to go walleye fishing in Ontario. We will host him and his parents for a week-long stay here at Charlton Lake Camp. Look for updates and photos on the camp Facebook page. The Camp continues to be a proud supporter of Relay for Life and Rotary Club International (we donate week-long stays for fund-raising auctions) and we're happy that this year we have an opportunity to give back in another way through Make-A-Wish.

Fall Specials

It's the middle of summer, but we're looking ahead to fall. Check out the "Fall 15" special on the main page of the website... we're offering an additional 15 percent off our already discounted fall rates! It's a great time of year to visit the La Cloche region, with fall colors, mild weather, and (usually) few 'skeeters.

Summer Goodies

Summer is a great time for fresh fruit. We started off the year with wild strawberries fresh picked out back of the camp. Then the blueberries came out... Willisville Mountain was loaded with the little blue delights. And now the raspberries are in full swing. Between the wild berries and the fruits available at the grocery store and produce stands, we've been baking up a storm so we thought we'd share an Easy Fruit Cobbler recipe with our readers. Super simple and delicious, this recipe is especially wonderful for pit fruits such as peaches. Enjoy with a generous scoop of ice cream!

Easy Fruit Cobbler

  • Fresh fruit sliced and sugared to taste (peaches work exceptionally well)
  • 3 TBSP butter
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 c. sugar
  • 2/3 c. boiling water
  • 1 c. flour
  • 1/4 c. milk
  • 1 TBSP cornstarch
  • 1 c. sugar
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F
  2. Cover bottom of a 7"x11" pan with the sliced fruit.
  3. In a bowl mix by hand the 3/4 c. sugar, butter, baking powder, salt, milk and flour. Spoon the mixture on top of the fruit.
  4. In another bowl, mix the 1 c. sugar and cornstarch together and sprinkle over the fruit and batter.
  5. Pour the 2/3 c. boiling water over all.
  6. Bake 50-60 minutes until top is golden brown and the fruit is bubbly.
  7. ***NOTE: The fruit juices will overrun the pan so protect your oven by baking the cobbler on a tray or lining the bottom of your oven with foil.

Warm wishes from the campfire,

Mark & Lori
