News From the Camp Fire - Spring 2010

Winter is flying by and we’re just a couple of weeks away from the equinox and Spring’s official arrival. We’ll be heading back up to CLC the 3rd week of April to open up for our annual Brock University Geology Field Camp. This year we’re welcoming a group of 17 hearty souls to brave the unpredictable early-season weather, led by La Cloche Mountains expert Professor Frank Fueten.

If you’re interested, click here to learn more about the unique geology that draws college field camps and helps make the La Cloche area so pretty.

We had a good time at the Columbus (Ohio) Sports, Vacation, and Boat Show in February. CLC veterans Bernie Petereit and Marti and Jeff Durbin came to say hi and commiserate about the cold central Ohio winter. We also had a chance to meet former CLC owners Jerry and Gayle Paul, who own Paul’s Marine just north of Columbus. We really enjoyed talking with them about The Old Days (well, not really that old, by CLC standards!). Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth to learn about Charlton Lake Camp and the Willisville area.

Camp Improvements

Returning guests will see a few changes this year. We removed the big gas tank on the main dock – it was a potential environmental hazard and, frankly, a bit of an eyesore. But we didn’t stop there. While moving the tank we discovered the old dock had pretty much run its course, so we demolished the whole thing! We’ll put a new dock in its place this spring, and build an improved screened-in fish cleaning hut.

The original ice house behind Cottage #7 needs a new roof. The old log structure has so much character…we want to save it but the roof will be “modern”. We won’t try to duplicate Percy Coones’ original “sawn on site” rafters and roof boards!

We’ll also be improving the fire pit area to safely accommodate more fire gazers and s’more eaters. We plan to get all these projects done before summer arrives – so we hope the weather cooperates

Another change for this year: we’ll be providing paper towels, TP, dish soap, garbage bags, washcloths, and bath towels for all guests. AND all gas is included with boat rentals! It’s not a huge thing, but hopefully it’ll make preparing for your get-away a little bit easier. And of course we’ll continue to provide all of your bed linens and pillows, and gas for your cottage’s propane grill. All you need to bring is food, beverages, and your personal items!

Also new this year is our optional mid-week linen service. If you choose this service (reservations required), on Tuesday your beds will be changed and clean towels provided for a low per bedroom rate. See our rates page for details.

Other News

One “green” reminder: our water is perfectly safe to drink (filtered, UV’d, and chlorinated) so you don’t have to bring any bottled water. Let’s keep those plastic bottles out of the landfills!

For U.S. visitors: Ontario recently passed its “distracted driver law”. It is illegal for drivers to talk, text, type, dial or email using hand-held cell phones and other hand-held communications and entertainment devices. Hands-free use of these devices is permitted. The new law also prohibits the viewing of display screens unrelated to driving such as laptop computers or DVD players. Click here for more information. And don’t forget that a passport or enhanced driver’s license is needed to return to the States (same as last year).

Upcoming Dates

Keep in Touch

Finally: We’re now on Facebook! – you can check out our photo album and become a Fan while you’re there. It’s a bit of a challenge for a techno-phobe like Mark to keep up with this new-fangled stuff, but Lori seems to get it.

All the best,

Mark & Lori
